I’ll be the first to acknowledge that Black girls are hypersexualized. Our bodies are heavily surveilled and our behaviors unfairly policed out of fear that we will misuse our sexuality. Any expression of autonomous sexual expression from a Black girl often falls into the prohibited category. What we wear, how we walk, and where we go are all regulated in service of repressing our sexuality. Even our dances scream danger to untrained eyes. We’re expected to protect ourselves from abusers, and it’s us who are held accountable when we are abused. People get on the internet and call Black babies who can barely speak “thotlers” because of how their little bodies are bent in a photo or how an adult dresses them. We’re denied the right to innocence before we’re old enough to know what it means. It’s a fucked-up prerequisite to the misogynoir we will have to face for most of our lives. In some cases, this early hypersexualization will be used to justify misogynoir and other sinister forms of harm. The line between being called “fast” (a term typically reserved for girl children when someone else projects premature sexuality onto them) and being called a “thot” is extremely thin.
